Former Minister Antonis Samaras won Sunday the conservative party polls and became ND´s 7th leader.

Samaras, former Foreign Affairs Minister under ND´s governemnt in ´90-´93 and Culture Minister from 2008 until last October, beat Dora Bakoyanni and Panagiotis Psomiadis to the polls after ex party leader and PM Costas Karamanlis stepped down.

Karamanlis, Prime Minister from 2004 to 2009, led ND to its worst to date defeat in last October´s elections.

Samaras is seen as the hardliners´ of the party mainly due to the stance he kept as a Minister on the FYROM dispute in ´92, which ultimately led him out of ND party.

He then formed Political Spring and brought down ND´s government in 1993.

In 2004, Karamanlis offered him a seat in the European Parliament, and he returned to ND.
